ANYA JENKINS
ANYANKA | CANON | BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
____________________
Anya isn't quite as human as she looks - she's a vengeance demon. But she wasn't always; she was actually born human. Of course, that was...over a thousand years ago in ninth century Sweden, but there you have it. She went by the name 'Aud' then, and lived a relatively simple life with her obnoxiously loud husband Olaf and her dozens of pet rabbits. And no, she wasn't crazy, thank you very much, just...a bit...eccentric. Unfortunately the people of the little village Aud lived in didn't take too kindly to 'eccentric', and she become something of an outcast. But she was never unhappy, exactly. She loved her husband (or at least, she thought she did - she was a bit young to know what love actually meant) and she was...well, generally just one of those people who go about enjoying their lives with a smile on their face.
Of course all of that crumbled to pieces when she discovered that Olaf had been cheating on her with a local barmatron. And that half the village seemed to have been aware of this fact before she was. Furious, humiliated, and above all, hurt, Aud turned to magic to seek vengeance against her husband. Surprisingly, magic seemed to be one thing that Aud was quite good at - she'd been on her way to becoming something of an accomplished witch before Olaf's infidelity was exposed. Making use of a particularly nasty little curse, Aud transformed Olaf into a literal troll - and set him loose on the village to wreak havoc.
She barely had time to revel in the grim sort of satisfaction she gained from her work when she was approached by a demon who called himself D'Hoffryn. D'Hoffryn, as he told her, was the leader of a group of creatures called vengeance demons - demons who, as their name suggested, granted wishes to punish people who supposedlydeserved it. Aud's vindictive act against Olaf had served to catch D'Hoffryn's attention, and he offered to ascend her to demonic status - if she would agree to work for him. With no one and nothing left she cared about in her old life, Aud agreed...perhaps without really understanding what she was agreeing to, but agreed none the less.
Abandoning her old human identity, Aud took on the demonic name 'Anyanka'. It was difficult, at first. Hurting people for the sake of hurting them. But these people, Anyanka continued to remind herself, had hurt others before - just as Olaf had hurt her - and they deserved to be punished. As the centuries passed, Anyanka became more and more indifferent to the pain she caused - in fact, she became so good at what she did that she garnered herself a reputation as one of the best (and most ruthless) vengeance demons D'Hoffryn had ever recruited. Just ask her about the time she effectively started the Russian Revolution - it's one of her proudest moments.
These days, Anyanka (who usually goes by the name 'Anya Jenkins' in order to blend in with human society) has all but completely lost touch with her sense of humanity. She doesn't really experience remorse for the things she does, and she doesn't really care about people in general - or know how to care about them, for that matter. Emotions actually tend to confuse her. ...Actually, there are a lot of human-related things that confuse her. Like the concept of 'tact', for instance - Anya just doesn't see why anyone would want to lie to make anyone else feel better. She's astoundingly blunt herself, to an effect that is simultaneously irritating and amusing, she takes everything literally, and overall...will just strike you as sort of odd - when she's being herself and not assuming some manipulative human identity, that is. But Anya doesn't particularly care what people think of her. She's entirely devoted to her job - vengeance is all that matters.
