You've probably all heard the story. Scary little imp grants a frightened girl's wish to spin yarn into gold so that she doesn't get executed for lying by the King. In return, he takes her jewels, and then demands something much more terrible and precious than any trinket...her firstborn child.
That, is the story of a scary little imp.
This is the story of the man behind the name.
Robert John Stilt was born in 1799 to good, hardworking parents in Aberdeen, Scotland. He was their firstborn son, and was expected to follow his father Andrew into work as a travelling smith. However, Robert was born...different. At the age of 12, he began to show signs of abnormality; he could conjure things out of nothing; if he needed a coin, it would appear in his hand, and so on. At the age of 15, he discovered that he could also get from one place to another extremely quickly. If sent on an errand into town, he would be back in just minutes. He hid from his parents exactly how he was managing it, saying that he could just run very fast. However, he wasn't running at all, he was just thinking where he needed to go and landing there, like stepping through a door from one side of the town to the other.
Eventually, when he was in his late teens, a girl that he had spurned the hand of discovered his secret, witnessing him take a step forward in an alleyway and simply disappear. Angry at the young man and wanting to make him pay, she told the town that he practiced witchcraft. Scared for his life and wanting to save his parents from any trouble that might befall them, he fled town that same night, transporting himself across the country to the capital as easily as if he had stepped out of one world and into another. However, travelling so far left him very tired, so he headed to an inn and rested there. While there, he encountered a woman by name of Mallie Cartwright, who noticed his curious talents and took him into her confidence. Mallie was in fact, as it turned out, a witch, and over the many years that he then stayed with her, she taught him how to use his powers properly, and he grew much stronger through her tutelage, though he remained prone to the effects of using too much of these powers at one time, growing tired easily after doing something difficult.
Eventually, at about the age of forty, he left Mallie's side and ventured out alone with the intention of travelling. He expected to see lines appear on his face like Mallie had, and he expected to see his hair turn to grey like her's did, but it never happened; and though he wandered, and travelled, for fifty, then a hundred years, he never started to grow old nor died. He began to realise the true extent of the gift he had been born with, and saw it instead rather as a curse-- a curse that would leave him eternally lonely. Many years of lonely wandering passed, during which he travelled through Scotland, England, Wales, never staying in one place for more than thirty or so years, so that nobody ever knew his secret. He changed his name and story so many times that eventually, he barely remembered his real one. He could only remember his surname, 'Stilt', as he kept it the same at all times, so that he did not forget his parents.
And then, one day, everything changed. He was staying in another inn, not far from London, in the time of a great war; bombs were going off in Europe and bombs were going off in the city too; and he was making his slow way towards them, thinking that if he were to be caught under their shadow, he would finally be free. A young lady got speaking to him, a storyteller who had compiled a book of fairy-tales; her name was Lilly, and for a little while, he found some happiness. While they travelled together, he didn't feel so empty anymore. She promised him the world, and he promised to marry her. But as things happen, so they did, and she left him for another man. Infuriated, he withdrew into a dark world between worlds that he had conjured for himself. He watched her, and he waited, he wanted her back and could think of nothing else...
...until she had a tiny baby with his russet hair and amber eyes.
But while he was joyful at the birth of his son, Lilly was not, and for three years, she neglected the boy while she attended great parties and parades. So in the dead of the night, when he could not watch anymore, he crept into their house and stole the child away. He had nowhere to live, he had no way to provide for him, a toddler could not live on the road. So he tracked down his fellow immortal, his old mentor, and left the boy in Mallie's arms.
Alone once more, he now had a purpose, and a way to channel the rage Lilly had left bubbling within him. He would live for his son, and he would redeem himself for leaving him behind. He began to put his powers to good use every time he found a new town; he would seek out any young woman who could not or would not look after their child, and he granted them whatever they wanted, in return for taking that child to a couple who would love them. He began to make other 'deals' too, as more and more people began to see him as someone who could bring them help, wishes granted in return for money or safe lodging. If they broke their end of the bargain, he would become infuriated, and they would find bad luck come down upon them like a curse. Over time, people began to speak of him with fear and reverence, and they told stories of an imp who would grant every desire, in return for one's offspring, like in the fairytale of Rumplestiltskin that Lilly had taught him.
He smiled to hear that story, and he took on the name for himself. Robert John Stilt, mutant and magician, became Rumplestiltskin.
In nature, Rumplestiltskin is generally cheery and kind, however, should you break your end of a deal or harm a child, his eyes will turn golden and fiery, and his wrath shall come down upon you like a hurricane. Rumple is immortal, but he's not invincible-- he can be hurt by stabs, falls, shots, ect, or simply by overusing his powers, something which he takes great care not to do. He's the sort of person who knows all the crooks and hears the rumours before anybody else does, thanks to his ease in getting from one place to another and doing deals.
