Anthony Edward Stark was born in Long Island, New York to Howard and Maria Stark, owners of Stark Industries. Tony, as he was called, was fascinated at an early age by anything mechanical and loved to build things. When he was 15, he entered the undergraduate electrical engineering program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. By the time he was 19, he had graduated with two master's degrees. He soon went to work for Stark Industries, but displayed a passion for living out his playboy lifestyle more than actually working. Tony inherited Stark Industries at 21 after his parents were killed in an automobile accident, which had been orchestrated by rival corporation Republic Oil. Tony promoted his secretary, Virginia "Pepper" Potts, to executive assistant. He also put most of the workload onto her.
Tony attended a field test of his military hardware at one of his international plants where he was later attacked by a gang of terrorists led by the Sin-Cong revolutionary Wong Chu. In the midst of everything, a land mine went off and lodged a piece of shrapnel near Tony’s heart. He was taken back to the camp and shared a cell with Professor Ho Yinsen, a world-famous physicist. The two men were demanded by Wong Chu to develop advanced weaponry. Knowing he might no survive, Tony convinced Ho Yinsen to develop a battlesuit that he had been developing. It would be equipped with a magnetic field generator to prevent the shrapnel from reaching his heart. Ho Yinsen was shot while creating a diversion. But Tony managed to charge the battery on the suit. This was his first battle as Iron Man, the name he would later take for his superhero alter ego.
The Iron Man suit was constantly worked on. Tony told everyone that Iron Man was his personal bodyguard. Later, he played a dual-role with the formation of The Avengers both as the sponsor and as Iron Man. Tony also helped establish the international super-spy agency SHIELD to combat terrorist threats.
