Born in the year 1908 in Brooklyn, New York, Lazarus Igby lived most of his life fatherless. His mother, Abigail Igby née Faust, worked in a garment factory she had been working at since the age of fifteen. Where she'd met Lazarus' father, Emmett Igby, who was a tailor at the factory. They were married when Abi was 16, and Emmett was 19, but Emmett died a short three years later from a sickness they could not afford to treat. So for two hard, but equally meaningful years, the Igby's had a complete family.
After Emmett's death, Abigail worked even more, but eventually moved into the living room of her parent's apartment above her father's barber shop. Herman, Lazarus' grandfather, put Lazarus to work by the age of eight, sweeping hair on the floor of the shop, and asking customers into the shop. As he got older, Herman taught him how to cut hair, give a man a shave. Nora, Herman's wife, tended to the book-keeping, but as she grew ill, and older, she taught Lazarus the math and organization needed to continue her work.
Lazarus attended school when he could, but in the colder months when snow made travel difficult, he usually stayed home and attempted to work during the ever-slowing business hours.
Nora passed first, and soon after Herman died as well. He from old age, Nora from pneumonia. Lazarus was left to take over the shop, and at first everything went along alright. Customers visited to pay their respects, and then paid for a service out of sympathy. Business was doing well enough that Lazarus took on an apprentice from the street, put him to work sweeping the floors as he'd done, and helped, he figured, feed another family.
When the stock market crashed just a year and a half later, Abi had to sit Lazarus down, tell he had to fire the little boy or they'd lose everything. Even after he had the heart-breaking talk with the boy, they nearly lost it all. Abigail's work had slowed tremendously; she was lucky if she got two hours of work a week. The shop wasn't doing any better, getting a professional shave and haircut was a luxury no one could afford.
Then something strange happened, one day when he turned the corner of an alley after picking up his food stamps...
Lazarus worries now, now that he's stepped through into some time hole, and left his mother with an empty stomach in the middle of the depression.
